Community Engagement

Giving Pillars

At SpartanNash, our philanthropy strategy aligns with three primary pillars – Hunger, Heroes and Hope. This strategy provides us with a roadmap of how we as a Company can sustain and scale our commitments, predict and respond to emerging needs, and engage our Associates and communities in socially responsible ways. We help champion:

Hunger Programs that Support:

  • Reducing food waste
  • Fighting food insecurity
  • Health and nutrition access and education
SpartanNash and Miller Poultry have partnered for 17 years and have donated over 310,000 pounds of chicken and sausage to food pantries throughout Michigan.

Hero Programs that Support:

  • U.S. military servicemembers, veterans and their families
  • Community leaders, including teachers, law enforcement, firefighters, healthcare workers and blood donors
  • SpartanNash frontline heroes and Associate volunteers
  • Disaster relief efforts
Our partnership with the Salvation Army and the Red Kettle Campaign allows donations collected to provide food, shelter, and utilities assistance to those who need it most every day of the year.

Hope Programs that Support:

  • Career skills training and pathways
  • A more sustainable environment
  • Diversity & Inclusion
SpartanNash partnered with Convoy of Hope in 2022 to distribute food, water and other supplies for those impacted by Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Fiona.

Corporate Donation Requests

At SpartanNash, we are investing in our local communities, working alongside our community partners through both our corporate giving and SpartanNash Foundation grants.

These requests range from sponsorships and in-kind donations to partnerships and volunteer activities that align with our giving pillars of Hunger, Heroes and Hope. Together with our nonprofit partners, we’re building stronger communities where we live, work and serve.

To continue building and strengthening these local relationships, we invite 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations complete the SpartanNash donation request form. Once the donation request form has been completed, visit your nearest retail store and meet with the Store Director to discuss the request.

PLEASE NOTE: Requests must be received at least 30 days in advance of the event.

Volunteering

SpartanNash Associates give back to their communities through volunteer efforts, building local relationships with one another and with their favorite nonprofit organizations and causes.

Many of our Associates have been volunteering for years or even decades, while others may be searching for the right opportunity to make a difference. As a company, we want to support our Associates who have, on their own, made a commitment to volunteering, and we want to inspire other associates to begin or increase their volunteering efforts. In this way, we can continually build stronger communities for our families and neighbors.

SpartanNash Associates who record more than 100 volunteer hours in a calendar year join the 100 Club. Members then select their favorite 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to receive a $100 donation in their name. This enables SpartanNash to recognize and reward those who go above and beyond in their volunteering efforts.

Our Core Behavior ‘We Serve’ is at the center of our People First culture. For all of us, service means showing up and contributing to our shared success. During our Helping Hands Day event in the Summer of 2022, more than 30 non-profit organizations were supported through our volunteer initiatives in Minneapolis, Grand Rapids, and Norfolk.
